Thanks Greg for your Lick#7-Counterpoint. I've been wanting to get that sound, but my 2nd. string won't lower that far. But, for those of us that have that set-up, all we have to do is slant the 2nd. string back to the 7th. fret and return to the 8th. fret no pedals. Thanks again.

Your welcome Lee!
Excuse me for my execution and cleanliness on this one. It's a little different and I was too lazy to re-record it. The facts are still the same though. Remember I'm a newby also! :)

Here's one that will take you through the weekend. I learned a thing or two making this one. I learned to be more aggressive in my string attack and play a little louder. My Derby isn't as noisy as you think. I was playing very quiet and that recorder works too good! Have a great week end! http://picosong.com/c9L

Greg,
Are these licks from a particular recording? If so, who? I'd like to hear it all in context.
Thanks

Dave,
These licks are not from any one particular recording. Just from different ways I've heard it played over the years. In fact, although those licks and the ones coming up all can be used in that song; they may not have all been used in that song at the same time. I use them all in my version. It's really just an explanation of licks using that song as an example. Thanks, Greg

Here's a couple more from my version of the song. There are so many moves or licks that you can put into this song. I've listened to from several players and there are many interpretations but the song still sounds like the song! There will be two more licks to come from this song. I think you'll get a lot of mileage out of this lesson. http://picosong.com/c4E
ps: I apologize. When I mentioned using the vertical lever, that will normally lower your b's (5&10) Use the lever that lowers your b,s. Thanks, Greg

Here's # 16. I stole this from the "Tab Man" Dick Sexton. It has a great sounding move at the 8 th fret on the way up and at the 3 rd coming back down. Both are "Counterpoints." Nothing sounds better when they're done right. The timing of the levers and pedals coming off at the right time is key.

A simple backing track that will work for this intro... Key of "G" intro played against the 5 chord.

Question/Answer...

Post by Dick Sexton »

We've had a question come up, by email, asking "What key are these licks in and what chord should they be played against?". A valid question, one that from this point forward, with Greg's help we will try to address and answer.

I'll start with Lick #16, actually an intro. It is played and tabbed in the key of "G". But, the intro is played against the "D7" or 5 of the key. The first two notes are what I call pick up notes, played alone with no back up at all. The Intro resolves to the "G" chord at the end. If you down loaded the backing track above, it is in the key of G.

I hope this helps...
I'll try to add the chords to any other tab. But, keep in mind, some times these thoughts are not key specific, and that part is left up to your discretion, as it should be. Try to play them in every key.

Thank you...
Dick

Steel Licks For The Newbie #17

This is actually played and tabbed in the key of "B"... Of course we need to learn them all in every key.
It can be used moving to the 4 chord by adding a couple notes or by moving back to the 1 chord by
adding a couple notes. Play with it, make it your own.

# 18. Okay; here's a little something that is very useful and recognizable. I'll assume that most of you all know it. I'll also assume that there are some that don't. This is for you. Thanks, Greg

# 19 I think I have lost my mind. I worked this song up for the band and at some point I realized that I had put a lick in it that wasn't there. I have no clue where it came from but it seemed very natural for the song. My apologies to whoever that lick belongs to. If no one claims it, I'll take it! Greg

ps: Sorry for the low volume. I forgot to check it when I recorded it. Turn it up! :)
