Post by Slim Lattimer »

Come on down and pick at the benefit for fellow steel guitarist, the late Chuck Isom. OK so Buddy might still be in Las Vegas, and Earnest may be heading down to the Swallows, but everyone else ought to come out and fill the dance floor with pedal steel guitars Image. I believe Mike Perlowin may be attending, as well as the legendary John McClung!

"Sweet Surrender" with bandleader Robert King and his $3.8 million P.A. will begin at 1:00 PM until ?, SUNDAY, July 16th.

Gardena Moose Lodge, 15509 S. Vermont Ave., Gardena,CA

$5 donation at the door, POT LUCK,
musical equipment for sale, & raffles.
ALL MUSICIANS ARE WELCOME TO SIT IN, SO COME ON DOWN !!!!!!!!!!!
[This message was edited by Slim Lattimer on 12 July 2000 at 12:50 PM.]

Yep, we'll be Swallowing It in Capistrano Sunday afternoon. It's Tucker Fleming's last gig after about 20 years as Chris Gaffney's drummer.

I'm going to try and make it.

I've know John McClung (another fabulous player) for at least 15 years, and in all that time we've almost never had a chance to play together, and never with twin steels.

This should be very exciting.

Cool. Something I can finally get to in the area if I can drag the good woman out. Thanks for the info.

John McClung has confirmed that he will be at this benefit with his MSA and Webb. In addition, there will be some mighty fine pickers of other stringed instruments also in attendance. However, b@#&*s are illegal in Gardena.

Directions: Take your favorite north/south or east/west freeway to the 110 (Harbor) freeway, exit at Redondo Beach Blvd., go west one block to Vermont Avenue and turn left.

Rumor has it that the venerable performing and recording artist, Gary Brandin, from the general Bakersfield/Newport Beach area may be joining us today!! Image Image Image Image

Seven steel players showed up. Unfortunately ony 3 of us brought our instruments, so we had some steel guitar trios, But wouldn't it have been cool if we all bright our axes and had 7 players all playing at once?

John McClung is amazing. He played so well I forgot how to play and just watched in awe. (I totally butchered my solo on SG rag.)

I was also in awe of his tone. Like me, he plays a wood body MSA, but he uses a Webb amp and some rack gear and sounded just beautiful.

I'm gonna have to get me a Webb.

Reporting in Captain.

The benefit was a success Image. We raised several hundred dollars for Chuck's widow, Jerry. The band "Sweet Surrender" donated their time, equipment and talent. The bandleader Robert King switched between bass, drums and backup vocals. His lovely wife Irene, handled most of the singing rhythm guitar, and coordination of the revolving musicians. We were treated to some mighty fine picking and singing by many of the L.A. area oldtimers including Mike Kelly and Joe Hulsey.
The Moose Lodge provided the facility and a nice array of holiday food, free of charge. They
had just held a "Christmas In July" for many of the local disadvantage children.
Thank you to all of you who attended, as well as those of you who were there in spirit. We had a nice turnout from Brothers and Sisters of the steel guitar community; Jim and Chris Berkson, Roger Lee (who also played a mean fiddle), John McClung (with friends Donna and Jan), Artie McEwan, Steve Miller (not the space cowboy), Mike Perlowin (the space cowboy Image), Bill Tauson, and BLACKIE TAYLOR. In addition to his cool, down & dirty bluesy pedal steel work, Mike Perlowin also demonstrated his prowess on mandolin. John McClung was right in his element on his extended E9th neck, as well as providing some swinging C6th tunes while he sang! I always marvel at his ability to do that. It was a special treat and a surprise to have Blackie Taylor attend. Blackie was John McClung's teacher and I know many Forumites also got their start with Blackie's guidance. Thank you Blackie for teaching those who are teaching us, and for continuing to provide lessons, sales and service at Southern California's last steel guitar store, Blackie Taylor Music in Riverside.
b0b, a very special thanks to you for creating and maintaining this great FORUM which enabled us to get the word out for the benefit.
Now, if all of the Forumites who are planning to go hear the Big E on Tuesday at the Orange County Fair, could all get together there, maybe we could all pitch in and buy Buddy a lemonade, and if we're really lucky, get a chance to shake his hand Image.
